Material Health Certificate

If a Cradle to Cradle certification is too complicated or not relevant for your company at this time, you may want instead to get a Material Health Certificate. A Material Health Certificate is your proof that your products are free from harmful chemicals and only contain substances that are healthy for both people and environment.

A Material Health Certificate is a ”light” version of a Cradle to Cradle certification. During a Cradle to Cradle certification, a product is evaluated in five categories. The Material Health certification encompasses only one of these categories: Material Health.

Material Health Certificate or Cradle to Cradle certificate?

The Material Health Certificate is basically a Cradle to Cradle certificate that only focuses on the material health category. Just like the Cradle to Cradle certification, the Material Health certification is accredited by a third-party. The certificate is conferred by the independent non-profit organization Cradle to Cradle Products Innovation Institute. The certificate is valid for two years, after which your product must then be recertified. Certification has four levels – from bronze to platinum.

Complete Cradle to Cradle certification encompasses all of the following five categories: Material Health, Product Circularity, Clean Air & Climate Protection, Water & Soil Stewardship and Social Fairness. So complete Cradle to Cradle certification includes the Material Health Certificate. Which of the two certifications you choose to aim for, will often depend on whether you only need proof that your product is healthy or whether your customers ask for a fully sustainable product. The difference between the two certifications is that the Cradle to Cradle certificate comes with a certification mark, whereas the Material Health Certificate does not.

During the Material Health Certification, all of the materials in your product will be mapped and assessed. In practice, we collect data on the product from your business and your subcontractors. Subsequently, all of the materials will be assessed, and the product achieves a material health certificate level depending on how healthy the materials are.

We will be happy to have a meeting with you, where we can explain how the process works in more detail, answering any questions you may have, and if possible, whether a Material Health Certificate is the best option for you.
