If a Cradle to Cradle certification is too complicated or not relevant for your company for the moment, you might want to get a Material Health Certificate instead. A Material Health Certificate is your proof that your products are free from harmful chemicals and only contain substances that are healthy for both people and environment.
A Material Health Certificate is a ”light” version of a Cradle to Cradle certification. During a Cradle to Cradle certification a product is evaluated in five categories. The Material Health certification encompasses only one of these categories: material health.
Material Health Certificate or Cradle to Cradle certificate?
Material Health Certificate is basically a Cradle to Cradle certificate that only focuses on the material health category. Just like the Cradle to Cradle certification, the Material Health certification is third-party. The certificate is conferred by the independent non-profit organization Cradle to Cradle Products Innovation Institute. It is valid for two years at a time, after which it has to be recertified. The certificate will achieve one of five levels – from branzo to platinum.
A full Cradle to Cradle certification encompasses all five categories: Material health, material reutilization, renewable energy and carbon management, water stewardship and social fairness. When having a products Cradle to Cradle certified, it comes with a free Material Health Certificate. Accordingly, with a Cradle to Cradle certification you get the full package. The question which of the two certifications to choose, will often depend on whether you only need proof that your product is healthy or your customers ask for a fully sustainable product. The difference between the two certifications is that the Cradle to Cradle certificate comes a label, whereas the Material Health Certificate does not.
How To Get a Material Health Certificate
During the Material Health Certification all the materials in your product will be mapped and assessed. In practice we collect data on the product from your business and your subcontractors. Subsequently, all of the materials will be assessed and the product achieves a level dependent on how healthy the materials are.
We will be happy to have a meeting with you, explaining you more about the process, answering your questions, and possibly clarify whether a Material Health Certificate is the best option for you.
